  • US Logistics Update [Dec 7, 2024]-English

U.S. Economy The Federal Reserve announced that “businesses expressed optimism that demand will rise in the coming months” in its latest Beige Book, released ahead of the December Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting on December 17-18. Fed Chair Jerome Powell also spoke at a New York Times event on Thursday, calling the US economy “in surprisingly good shape”. Meanwhile, preliminary Mastercard figures show that retail sales on Black Friday, which marks the start of the annual holiday shopping season, were the largest on record, up 3.4% year-over-year. With many companies promoting potential price hikes in the wake of President-elect Trump's “tariff bombshell,” there is speculation that this year's holiday shopping season will be a record-breaking one. The holiday shopping season, from Black Friday to Cyber Monday to Christmas sales, accounts for more than one-third of retailers' sales in a year.   Despite the election of President-elect Trump, who has expressed resistance to green policies, including electric vehicles, six states, including California, New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, Washington, and Oregon, will require 35 percent of new cars in the 2026 model year to be zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs - zero-emission electric and hydrogen vehicles). The number of states joining the ZEV mandate will increase to 12 next year, and California, which is leading the charge, is the largest EV market in the U.S., accounting for 25% of all EV sales. The response from Korea is also gaining attention, as 17 electric vehicle battery plants (8 by LG Energy Solution, 6 by SK On, and 3 by Samsung SDI) are either operational or under construction in the United States.     Maritime Cargo Market Trends North America Vessel, Rail Dwell time (Week 49 / Flexport) Rail delay weighted in most of the western ports of the Americas such as LA/LGB, SEA and VAN, Prince Rupert, etc.  West Coast Port Situation Update Increased US holiday shopping season volumes, diversions to western ports due to East and Gulf port strike concerns, and possible 'tariff bombs' from President-elect Trump is imminent, leading to a significant increase in cargo volumes in most western US ports, including LA/LGB, and increasing concerns about port congestion. rail connectivity, but it will also affect port operations in the future, significantly increasing the risk that congestion will recur.    Labor negotiations at East and Gulf ports The International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) and employer group United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) are locked in a sharp standoff over automation at U.S. ports with less than a month and a half to go before the January 15, 2025 deadline for a tentative labor agreement. In a Dec. 2 Facebook post, ILA Vice President Dennis Daggett criticized semi-automated rail-mounted gantry cranes (RMGs) as job-killers and a national security risk if hacked, while USMX on Dec. 3 defended automation as essential to modernizing ports and expanding port handling capacity due to land shortages. Meanwhile, the two sides are currently in no negotiations.   Air Cargo Market Trends Canada Post Strike Update The Canada Post strike enters its fourth week with no progress in labor negotiations. In an appearance on CTV on Friday night, December 6, Mr. Jim Gallant, the arbitrator representing the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, stated that Canada Post's new offer is extremely disappointing as it is the exact opposite of the union's demands. The strike is expected to be prolonged.   Airfreight Price and Space Trends from the US Significant increase in demand driven by e-commerce cargo for the holiday shopping season, including Black Friday, causing some supply shortages. Spot prices up. Same situation expected to continue until mid-January next year due to demand for purchasing and transportation of goods before price hike due to 'tariff bomb'.

  • US Logistics Update [Nov 30, 2024]-English

U.S. Economy The U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) grew at a preliminary annualized rate of 2.8% in the third quarter, the Commerce Department reported on Nov. 27. This is the same as the preliminary estimate released last month, indicating that the pace of growth has slowed slightly from the second quarter (3.0%), but continues to be strong. Meanwhile, the growth rate of the personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index, which the Fed uses to guide its monetary policy decisions, was revised downward to 2.1% from 2.2%, bringing it closer to the Fed's inflation target (2%). President-elect Trump's announcement of new “tariff bombs” targeting Canada, Mexico, and China has raised concerns that the tariffs may have ulterior motives beyond the ostensible goal of putting “America first” with strong protectionist policies. Notably, Trump's 25% tariffs on China under his administration did not stimulate inflation much (see graph above, right). Some have speculated that Trump's announcement could be a precursor to the renegotiation of the U.S./Mexico/Canada Agreement (USMCA). This hints that President-elect Trump may use tariffs as a tool to pursue various political and economic negotiations, free from inflationary pressures. Maritime Cargo Market Trends North America Vessel, Rail Dwell time (Week 48 / Flexport)                => Rail delays of 1-2 weeks continue to occur in most western ports such as LA/LGB, SEA and Canada VAN, Prince Rupert, etc.  Port of LA, October container handling volume increased by 25% year-on-year . The Port of Los Angeles announced that container throughput increased 25% year-over-year in October to 905,000 units, driven by increased volumes in response to tariff hikes and concerns about a resumption of the East Coast and Gulf port strikes. The Port of Long Beach also reported near-record volumes, with the two ports combining to handle 950,303 import containers. This surge in import volumes is expected to continue through early next year due to further increases in tariffs and delays in reaching a settlement in labor negotiations at the East Coast ports.      Air Cargo Market Trends Canada Post Strike Update Approximately 55,000 Canada Post employees have been on a nationwide strike since November 15, with no progress in negotiations as of the third week of the strike. Last week, a federally appointed special mediator temporarily suspended mediation because “the positions of the two sides are too far apart,” Canadian Labor Minister Steven MacKinnon said on 11/27. With the upcoming holiday shopping season, including Christmas, a major disruption in mail delivery is causing significant chaos.   U.S. downgrades China travel warning On the 27th, the U.S. Department of State downgraded its travel advisory for China (Mainland) from Level 3, "Reconsider Travel," to Level 2, "Exercise Increased Caution," which is a recommendation for U.S. citizens. The highest level of the State Department's travel advisory is Level 4, "Do Not Travel," while the lowest level is Level 1, "Exercise Normal Precautions." Although this move came shortly after the U.S.-China prisoner exchange, many experts view the decision as a very positive signal for the potential increase in U.S.-China flights.    International cargo flights from China are breaking records daily The number of international freighter flights to and from China has exceeded 3,400 weekly for three consecutive weeks and reached a record 3,485 this week, amid fierce competition to move goods before President-elect Trump's tariffs, reports Bloomberg, citing statistics from the Chinese Ministry of Transportation. The trend is expected to continue through Jan. 20, the date of President-elect Trump's inauguration next year. Meanwhile, through October, China's international cargo flights were up 73% year-on-year, and international cargo volume was up 8.3% year-on-year, according to the report.

  • US Logistics Update [Nov 23, 2024]-English

U.S. Economy Ahead of President-elect Trump's inauguration, U.S. markets are focused on how the Fed's monetary policy will change. With the Republican Party taking control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives following Trump's election, expectations of a rate cut by the Federal Reserve (Fed) are rapidly cooling amid concerns that inflation could return if Trump's campaign promises of tariffs, tax cuts, and mass deportations of illegal immigrants are realized.   Amid a flurry of reports about the impact of a Trump presidency, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on Tuesday that some U.S. companies are rushing to buy products from China to sell for months and up to a year in advance. The WSJ reported that even when the first Trump administration launched a "tariff war" against China in 2018, some companies stockpiled Chinese products, and that since October, when Trump's election became likely, Chinese exports to the U.S. have already increased 13% year-over-year. Wall Street analysts expect these pre-orders to continue to drive China's exports to the U.S. in the coming months.   Meanwhile, the election was not a Republican victory but a Democratic defeat, suggesting that Trump's policies will face stiff resistance. In other words, Trump's vote total in the 2024 election was 77 million, an increase of 3 million votes from 2020, while Vice President Harris received 74 million votes compared to Biden's 81 million in 2020, a decrease of 7 million votes. Many voters refused to go to the polls because they felt they could not vote for either Democratic or Republican candidate. Given that economic distress caused by high inflation was a major factor in the GOP's victory, it will be interesting to see how the party will implement policies that could cause high inflation, such as tariffs/tax cuts/deportation of illegal immigrants. Maritime Cargo Market Trends North America Vessel, Rail Dwell time (Week 47 / Flexport) => Rail delay intensified in most western ports such as LA/LGB, SEA and Canada VAN, Prince Rupert, etc.  Rail Delay Situation Rail delays are intensifying as container volumes on the U.S. West Coast surge due to the arrival of the peak season, the search for alternatives to the East Coast port strike, and concerns about tariffs from the Trump administration. Shippers are responding with more costly alternatives such as cross-docking, air diversion, transloading, and diversion to Mexican/Canadian coastal ports to avoid delays. Many experts do not expect rail delays to be resolved until the first quarter of next year.   Montreal, BC (British Columbia) Port Update Port of Montreal in eastern Canada and Vancouver/Prince Rupert in western Canada resumed operations last weekend. However, backlogs are taking a long time to be processed, which may lead to an increase in Detention, Demurrage (D&D) and arguments.    US ILA and USMX Labor Negotiations Trends On the 19th, the AAFA (American Apparel & Footwear Association) urged ILA and USMX to continue negotiations on the master contract set to expire on January 15th next year. The AAFA, an organization with more than 1,000 fashion industry members, asked the ILA and USMX to negotiate to avoid a strike at East and Gulf Coast ports. It also sent a separate letter to President Joe Biden, urging the U.S. government to expand its efforts to protect international maritime traffic routes in the Red Sea from attacks by Houthi rebels. Meanwhile, to prepare for a possible strike by East and Gulf Coast dockworkers next January and President-elect Trump's higher tariffs, U.S. retailers imported 350,000 TEUs more containers than expected in November and December, according to Global Port Tracker. Specifically, November imports are expected to increase by 13.6% year-on-year and December imports are expected to increase by 6.1%.   ㅇ 2025 Ocean Alliances (by Lars Jensen) Air Cargo Market Trends Canada to Strike About 55,000 Postal Workers On November 15, approximately 55,000 Canada Post employees went on a nationwide strike, demanding a 24% wage increase and improved working conditions over the next four years. As a result, the delivery of 85,000 passports has been suspended, and there are concerns of major disruptions in mail delivery during the peak holiday shopping season, including Christmas.   Rising expectations of resuming transit through Russian airspace President-elect Trump has vowed to immediately end the war between Russia and Ukraine if he takes office. If Trump fulfills his pledge and allows access to Russian airspace, it is expected to significantly improve the convenience of airlines and various customers who are suffering from increased operating costs and reduced supplies.

  • US Logistics Update [Nov 16, 2024]-English

U.S. Economy The U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 2.6% year-over-year in October, the Labor Department announced on November 13th. This is up 0.2 percentage points from September (2.4%) and marks the first time in seven months that consumer prices have stopped slowing and rebounded on an annualized basis since March (3.5%). Excluding volatile items such as energy and food, core CPI rose 3.3% y/y, the same as the September increase. Attention is now focused on future inflation trends, as experts believe that President-elect Trump's key campaign promises of tariffs, tax cuts, and immigration policies will trigger inflation. Meanwhile, with inflation data showing signs of stagnation and the U.S. economy continuing to grow strongly, led by consumption, there is growing speculation that the Fed may slow the pace of future rate cuts. (CME Fedwatch sees a 41.3% probability of the Fed keeping rates unchanged in December, hike from 22% a week ago)   With the Republican Party securing majority status in the House of Representatives as well as the Senate, incoming U.S. President Donald Trump will have a strong power base and is expected to push ahead with his key campaign promises, including tax cuts, building a border wall, deporting illegal immigrants, and fixing Obamacare, at a rapid pace in his first term. As a result, all sectors of the economy are expected to move quickly in line with the president-elect's policies, keeping sourcing managers, especially those who rely heavily on China, very busy.   Maritime Cargo Market Trends North America Vessel, Rail Dwell time (Week 46 / Flexport) => Rail delay at LA/LGB ports ongoing  Montreal, BC (British Columbia) Port Update On November 12, Canadian Labor Minister Steven MacKinnon's compulsory arbitration is expected to resume operations next Monday, November 18, with the ports of Montreal and Vancouver, Prince Rupert, and Nanaimo. Meanwhile, the British Columbia port unions have indicated that they plan to challenge the Canada Industrial Relations Board's cease-and-desist order and Minister Steven MacKinnon's compulsory arbitration, setting the stage for further disputes.   U.S. ILA and USMX Labor Negotiations On Wednesday, November 13, the ILA announced that it had suspended negotiations with USMX following an impasse during a meeting in New Jersey the previous day, after USMX presented proposals regarding the automation and semi-automation of ports. The suspension of negotiations is expected to lead to the full-scale start of shipments via the West Coast bypass route. In preparation for the potential strike by East and Gulf Coast dockworkers in January and the higher tariffs under President-elect Trump, U.S. retailers are expected to import 350,000 more TEUs than initially anticipated in November and December, according to Global Port Tracker. Specifically, November imports are expected to increase by 13.6% year-on-year, while December imports are forecasted to rise by 6.1%.     Air Cargo Market Trends Canada lifts restrictions on Chinese flights Amid ongoing restrictions on Chinese airlines' flights to the U.S., the Canadian government has decided to lift its flight restrictions to China. In response, Air Canada (AC) plans to increase its flights to China from Vancouver from four to 14 times a week, with daily flights to Shanghai from four times a week in December and daily flights to Beijing from January 15 using B787 aircraft. Meanwhile, the U.S. continues to maintain flight restrictions on China (resulting in a significant shortage of passenger and cargo supply between China and the U.S.), and it will be interesting to see if the Trump administration will change this policy.   Amazon opens webstore to sell ultra-low-priced products Amazon opened Amazon Haul, a webstore that sells ultra-low-priced goods aimed at Temu and Shein, on the 13th. • US Logistics Update [Nov 9, 2024]-English

U.S. Economy The Federal Reserve (Fed) cut its benchmark interest rate by another 25 basis points, the second such cut since September, bringing the benchmark rate to 4.5%-4.75% from 4.75%-5.0%. The Fed said the economy continues to expand, unemployment has risen but remains low, and inflation is nearing its 2% target. Meanwhile, Fed Chairman Jerome Powell, who has been at odds with President Trump, says in a press conference on December 7 that he will not step down if President-elect Trump calls for his resignation. In addition, many experts, including those on Wall Street, are expecting another 0.25% rate cut at the December FOMC meeting on December 17-18.   With Donald Trump becoming the next president of the United States, logistics companies are scrambling to figure out how the next four years will affect freight rates, foreign trade, and commodity costs. In particular, during the campaign, Trump pledged to impose tariffs of between 60% and 100% on imports from China, and 10-20% on all other imports, and many are wondering how this will affect them. In past instances, freight rates have risen as companies rush to stock up before tariffs are imposed. In addition, while many companies are moving production to countries such as Vietnam and Mexico, China's manufacturing capabilities are still difficult to replicate, so many companies will likely continue to source goods from China despite the tariffs.   Maritime Cargo Market Trends ㅇ North America Vessel, Rail Dwell time (Week 45 / Flexport)   => Rail delay intensified at LA/LGB ports remain (12 days)  ㅇ Canada BC (British Columbia) Port               * Locked out International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 514 port workers and supporters listen to NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh speak at a rally on November 8, 2024 in Vancouver. An update to the company's website on Saturday night, November 9, indicating that the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS) mediation between the parties has ended without progress and no further negotiations have been scheduled.
