- US Logistics Update [Jul 26, 2025]-English
As the August 1 deadline for tariff relief approaches, President Trump said at the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Summit in Washington, DC on Wednesday, July 23, that “reciprocal tariffs are not going to go below 15%,” adding that “reciprocal tariffs for any country are going to be between 15% and 50%.” “If you open up (markets) to American companies, we will lower the tariffs,” he said, emphasizing that “tariffs are very important, but opening up other countries' markets can be even more important.” Meanwhile, the New York Times reported on July 22 that the value of the U.S. dollar has fallen to its lowest level since 1974, as President Trump's tariff bombs have raised doubts about the dollar’s status as a safe-haven asset. The euro, on the other hand, has gained more than 11% against the dollar so far this year, rising to $1.18, its highest level in four years. While a weaker dollar makes U.S. exports more competitive, it is likely to weigh on inflation by raising prices on imported goods. President Trump, who favors a weaker dollar, renewed pressure on the Fed to cut rates during his visit, saying neither tariffs nor a weaker dollar stimulate inflation. President Trump's job approval remains solid at 46%, unchanged from April, according to a July WSJ poll. With 88% of Republicans approving of his performance, the president's political standing is being boosted by a significant improvement in his assessment of the economy, with 47% of respondents rating the economy as “excellent or good” (see graph below), an 11-point increase from April. Meanwhile, there is high dissatisfaction with tariff policy, the tax and spending bill, immigration policy, and the handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case. North America Vessel Dwell Times NMFC Classification System Overhauled... FedEx Freight Announces 150-Day Delay in Implementation The National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) system, the basis for determining less-than-truckload (LTL) shipping rates across the U.S., will undergo a major overhaul effective July 20, 2025. The National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) announces that more than 2,000 commodities have been transitioned from the previous multi-component criteria to a weight and volume-centric rate classification system. Many shippers are reacting to this change because bulky but lightweight, low-density cargo (e.g., chairs, foam, cabinets, etc.) are likely to see rate increases. In the meantime, FedEx Freight, the largest LTL carrier in the U.S. with about 15% of the U.S. LTL market, announced that it will delay the implementation of the new classification system for 150 days, starting December 1. Other LTL carriers (e.g., Old Dominion, XPO, etc.) are currently implementing the new classification without a moratorium and warning that inaccurate information could result in rate readjustments or additional costs. Experts say providing accurate weights and dimensions is key to avoiding rate increases. Meanwhile, while U.S. LTL trucking rates are stabilizing, long-haul LTL rates are up 7.8% year-over-year in June, the highest rate of the year so far (see graph below) 'Code Red' congestion at Nordic ports in August and September as Asian exports surge European port authorities and global shipping lines are warning of severe congestion at Nordic ports in August and September due to the arrival of a large number of export containers from Asia. Exports from China and other major Asian countries to Europe have been growing at double-digit rates so far this year, with more than 2 million TEUs of cargo expected to arrive in Northern Europe alone during August and September. Europe's major gateway ports, notably Rotterdam, Antwerp, Hamburg and the London Gateway, are already experiencing vessel delays and yard saturation, with the industry assessing the situation at a ‘Code Red’ level. Global carriers are reducing transits to some hub ports and increasingly shifting to Denmark-Sweden direct port services to alleviate congestion. European port congestion has caused the on-time arrival rate on the Asia-North Europe route to plummet to 29% as of July, and experts believe the congestion is likely to continue throughout the third quarter. Airfreight demand plummets as ocean frontloading rises... China e-commerce regulation impact in full swing The relatively long extension of the U.S. moratorium on high tariffs on Chinese goods to the U.S. until August has led to the frontloading of ocean freight shipments from Asia, which in turn has significantly weighed on trans-Pacific air freight demand, JOC reported, citing Rotate and Freightos. In other words, the moratorium was long enough for ocean freight and there was no reason for air freight. Meanwhile, along with the plunge in e-commerce volumes, air freight rates on the China-US route fell 7% month-on-month to $5.17 per kilogram in July. This is likely due to the US de minimis ban, which has been in effect since May. In fact, e-commerce airfreight from China is down 44% year-on-year, and Temu and Shein's US app downloads have plummeted 77% and 51% respectively. On the other hand, general cargo and high-value items such as semiconductors from Southeast Asia and Taiwan are on the rise, indicating that airlines are shifting their strategy toward traditional shippers and B2B markets.

- US Logistics Update [Jul 19, 2025]-English
The U.S. Department of Labor reported that the U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 2.7% year-over-year and 0.3% month-over-month in June. The increase was driven by items more exposed to tariffs, including toys, furniture, appliances, and apparel, which the WSJ characterized as “a potential sign that businesses are beginning to pass on the cost of tariffs to consumers.” Excluding volatile energy and food, core CPI rose 2.9% year-over-year and 0.2% month-over-month. Meanwhile, the annualized and monthlyized inflation rates of producer prices (PPI) in June were 2.3% and 0.0%, respectively, lower than the previous month (2.7% and 0.3%, respectively). The annualized and monthlyized rates of the underlying PPI were also 2.5% and 0.0%. Market reaction to the lower than expected PPI, which affects consumer prices after a period of time, was very surprising. The Fed is taking a wait and see approach to see if the tariffs will be a one-time blow to prices or a persistent inflationary factor. Following Vietnam and Indonesia's trade deal with the U.S., tariff rates from other countries are in focus. Based on the tariff rates of existing trade deals with the UK (10%), Vietnam (20%), and Indonesia (19%), and proposed tariffs on Canada (35%), the EU (30%), and Mexico (30%), the US reciprocal tariffs with China are expected to be at least 10% and up to 35%. However, high tariffs of around 30% would significantly undermine trade, so the U.S. is expected to push for a negotiated settlement with tariffs of around 20%, and in return, push for trade openness to the level the U.S. wants. Retail purchases in the U.S., which account for 70% of U.S. GDP and serve as a driver of U.S. economic growth, increased 0.6% in June after two consecutive months of declines, contrary to many experts' expectations that tariffs would reduce spending. The US is now divided on whether to lower or keep interest rates despite the tariffs, with continued low inflation and near full employment (below is a graph of recent retail sales growth). Powell's position as Fed Chairman, which has been rocked by financial markets under Trump's pressure to fire him, could be significantly shaken if he is held accountable for the Fed's wolfish response to tariffs if, as he says, the impact of tariffs on inflation is limited by the end of the summer. North America Vessel Dwell Times No peak season for frontloading due to tariffs With importers and exporters facing major disruptions due to the whiplash effect of President Trump's repeated tariff roller coaster, many experts are predicting that frontloading and retail sales will slow down this year. According to the National Retail Federation's Global Port Tracker, import volumes are expected to decline 21.6% year-on-year in September and 20% year-on-year in October. Vietnam Air Cargo Demand Surges Amid Tariff War The imposition of high tariffs on China has prompted U.S. importers to shift sourcing to Southeast Asian manufacturing nations, with cargo from Vietnam in particular surging. According to Rotate, through April of this year, U.S.-bound volumes from Ho Chi Minh City grew 62% year-over-year, with further growth likely to follow. In response to the increased volume from Vietnam, APEX Logistics, a subsidiary of Kuehne + Nagel, is chartering 14 weekly cargo flights, with freight rates exceeding $6.00/kg from Ho Chi Minh City to Chicago, according to Freightos. Although the U.S.-Vietnam trade agreement was finalized and reciprocal tariffs on Vietnam were set at 20%, Vietnam's lower manufacturing costs compared to other countries such as China are expected to continue to drive strong volume growth. Ukraine's AN-124 cargo plane ‘Ruslan’ completes conversion Ukraine's ANTONOV Airlines completed the conversion of its mega-transporter An-124-100 ‘Ruslan’, a powerhouse of heavy and oversized cargo transport, replacing Russian-made parts with Western and national products, and transported it to Germany on July 11th. The exclusion of Russian-made components symbolizes the resilience and independence of Ukrainian aviation technology. The AN 124 is the world's largest transport airplane in existence, with Russia and Ukraine owning and operating the majority of the 19 total production runs. Ukraine's An-124s were relocated to Leipzig, Germany, in the aftermath of the Russo-Ukrainian war, and are in high demand worldwide. Watch the AN 124 video : https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x9n5y7i
- US Logistics Update [Jul 12, 2025]-English
President Trump issued an executive order on July 7 delaying the suspension of reciprocal tariffs from July 9 to August 1. This means that all US trading partners will be subject to the existing reciprocal tariffs until August 1, except China, whose 10% reciprocal tariff rate expires on August 12. Meanwhile, Trump's last-minute intervention proved to be very upsetting for Vietnam, which was notified of the 20% tariffs, Bloomberg reported. Vietnam had initially sought a 10% to 15% tariff and was reportedly in agreement with 11%, but Trump's last-minute intervention led to the 20% tariff. Vietnam is the 7th largest importer of US goods, with an import share of 4.5% (Graph below, first), and is expected to have a significant impact on the tariff rates of Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and other countries with similar trade volumes. In particular, it is highly likely that the tariff rate will be higher than the current 10% temporary tariff. In addition, trade policy changes are pushing the U.S. warehouse vacancy rate to an 11-year high of 7.1% in the second quarter of this year, the WSJ reported (graph above, second). Despite the high vacancy rate, warehouse rents are rising at a 3% annualized rate, as companies are delaying lease signings and maximizing the use of existing warehouses due to tariff policy uncertainty. Automakers are stepping up their promotion of electric vehicle purchases ahead of the expiration of a $7,500 tax credit in September, Reuters reports. Tesla's homepage says, "$7,500 Federal Tax Credit Ends. Take delivery by September 30, 2025," and Ford is extending its free home charger and installation offer through the end of September to attract EV buyers. Some analysts believe that consumers who have been putting off purchases may be more likely to do so in early Q3. Meanwhile, research from Berkeley and other universities suggests that the end of the tax credit could lead to a 27% drop in electric vehicle registrations. North America Vessel Dwell Times FDA-Regulated De Minimis Must Go Through FDA Review (July 9) On July 9, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced that all de minimis shipments subject to FDA regulations must now go through FDA Review, effective immediately. Previously, many de minimis shipments subject to FDA regulations were exempt from FDA Review. With this action, FDA-regulated De Minimis shipments must now include Partner Government Agency (PGA) data. Meanwhile, De Minimis will be completely repealed on July 1, 2027 under the BBB Act, which was passed last week. US Bank Completes First Digital Bill of Lading (eBL) Transaction, Accelerating Digital Transformation of Trade Finance US Bank has completed its first trade finance transaction utilizing digital bills of lading (eBL), taking a step closer to its goal of 100% digital BoL by 2030. The transaction was facilitated through WaveBL software, with MSC as the carrier. The digital BoL replaces the traditional document delivery process, reducing days of document delivery to minutes, increasing security and efficiency, while the adoption of eBLs will reduce the need for letters of credit (LCs) in the long term, which is expected to change the structure of finance and logistics. Dockworkers' Unions from Around the World to Gather in Lisbon in November to Stop Port Automation Dockworkers' unions from around the world will meet in Lisbon on November 5 for an “Anti-Automation Conference” to explore joint action against port automation. Led by the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA), representing the US East and Gulf region, and the International Dockworkers Council (IDC), representing Europe and South America, the meeting will discuss strategies to protect labor rights and preserve jobs under the theme “People over Profit.” While the proliferation of AI-5G-based automation in container terminals has sparked strikes and conflicts in the U.S., Europe is wary of automation but is gradually embracing it as a competitive advantage. The meeting will focus on the possibility of cross-border solidarity strikes and establishing a joint response roadmap. Air Cargo Market Impact of Delayed Tariffs WorldACD notes that the Trump administration's announcement that it will further delay the imposition of reciprocal tariffs until August 1 could lead to a resurgence in frontloading by major trading partners such as Japan and South Korea. This is because tariff rates similar to those imposed on Vietnam, the EU, and Mexico are expected to be imposed on these countries, with the current temporary rate of 10% being much lower. In the long term, the repeal of De Minimis will have a significant impact on the future air cargo market and air cargo growth rates, as it is expected to weaken U.S.-Asia trade after the tariff negotiations are completed, causing a significant amount of Pacific freighter capacity to be diverted to other routes. However, although there is a great concern that the abolition of De Minimis will lead to a contraction in air cargo demand, the air cargo market has always faced a new turning point with the emergence of new growth engines, so it is necessary to observe the market flow and flexibly respond to changes.

Despite fears that President Trump's tariff policies would lead to higher prices and more unemployment, prices stabilized and the unemployment rate actually fell. The U.S. unemployment rate fell to 4.1% in June, down from the previous month and below market expectations of 4.3%, according to the U.S. Department of Labor (see graph below, left). As recession fears faded, market expectations for a rate cut by the Federal Reserve (Fed) also fell sharply. Meanwhile, President Trump's pressure on Powell to cut rates intensified. Meanwhile, price hikes at U.S. department stores are accelerating in the wake of tariffs, CNBC reports. According to DataWeave, shoe prices at Macy's are up an average of 4.2% and Nordstrom is up 3.1% (see graph below, right), with clothing and bags also seeing higher prices across the board. Some experts point out that “U.S. prices have risen enough since the pandemic that the inflationary impact of tariffs will be limited” as a reason why prices are not rising significantly despite President Trump's tariff policy. However, many experts believe that the weak dollar will continue to weaken the offsetting effect of the tariffs and that even if a tariff deal is reached, the high rate tariffs of 10-50% on major countries will remain, leaving a lot of room for inflation. President Trump's ‘One Big Beautiful Bill ActOBBBA’, which contains the core contents of his second term, was approved by Congress, completing the enactment of key national issues such as tax cuts and immigration within five months of taking office. Despite the political headwinds of reducing support for low-income people and concerns of widening the fiscal deficit due to large-scale tax cuts, President Trump's game plan worked, and his future behavior is highly anticipated. North America Vessel Dwell Times US/Vietnam tariff deal reached On July 2, President Trump announced a trade agreement with Vietnam via Truth Social that would apply tariffs of 20% on goods from Vietnam, 40% on goods transshipped to the US, and 0% on US goods imported into Vietnam. The tariff rates on Vietnam will be used as a benchmark for negotiations with the remaining countries. Meanwhile, with less than five days to go until July 9, the end of President Trump's 90-day reciprocal tariff moratorium, President Trump indicated that he is unlikely to extend the temporary tariff moratorium, but left the door open by saying “it could happen, it's not a big deal.” In any case, the “free trade era” that people didn't want to admit is now completely over. Market Trends from Asia to the U.S. According to WorldACD, air cargo volumes from China and Hong Kong decreased by 11% year-on-year in June. Compared to March, before the tariffs were imposed, volumes were down 15%, continuing a downward trend. The overall market average price was $4.73/kg, down 16% from $5.10/kg last year. However, the last 10 days have seen a rebound in the wake of the Amazon Prime Day sales event (July 8-11), which has led to some supply shortages. On the other hand, the overall market average price from Asia-Pacific countries, excluding China and Hong Kong, to the U.S. was $5.19/kg in June, up about 10% month-on-month and remaining at the June 2024 level. De Minimis Permanently Eliminated (July 2027) The passage of the ‘One Big Beautiful Bill ActOBBBA Act’ will permanently abolish the application of de minimis to goods imported from all countries from July 2027.

Amid growing pressure on the Federal Reserve (Fed) from President Trump to cut interest rates amid low inflation and solid employment data, Fed Chairman Powell reaffirmed his wait-and-see stance, saying “we don't see a need to rush,” during his semi-annual monetary policy report hearing before the House Financial Services Committee on Thursday. Citing the same reasons as President Trump that the “labor market and economy remain strong,” Powell noted that the Fed is “well positioned” to wait for the impact of tariffs on the economy to become clearer. Meanwhile, the U.S. economy was finally confirmed to have contracted in the first quarter of the year, after a temporary surge in imports (graph below, left). The Commerce Department's final estimate of U.S. GDP growth for the first quarter came in at -0.5%, down -0.3 percentage points from last month's preliminary estimate of -0.2%. This is the first time in three years that the lone booming U.S. economy has contracted on a quarterly basis since the first quarter of 2022 (-1.0%). It appears that the U.S. economy was not as robust as first thought, as personal consumption expenditure growth, which accounts for 70% of GDP, was revised down to 0.5% from a preliminary 1.2%. Meanwhile, the value of the U.S. dollar also hit its lowest level since 2023 last week (graph above, right). As the dollar depreciates, the ability of the exchange rate to absorb upward pressure on prices from tariffs is likely to weaken. In addition, as the July 9 expiration date of the tariff moratorium approaches and anxiety among countries is growing, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent reaffirmed the possibility of extending the moratorium by stating on June 26 that the conclusion of tariff negotiations with major countries will be delayed until around September 1. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is reportedly tightening up its review of Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) approvals for 90-day visa-free visits to the U.S. and has significantly increased inspections of cargo imported into the U.S., amid frustrating delays. According to industry sources, CBP has recently increased its electronic and on-site inspections, focusing on the potential for duty evasion through country of origin shifting and item alteration. As a result, delays and delays in customs clearance, tariff corrections, and penalties are occurring one after another. Trans Pacific East Bound (TPEB) Trends Demand: Demand continues to decline ahead of the expiration of the temporary tariff moratorium(July 9). Vessel supply: recovered to 96% of normal level. Demand decreased but not oversupplied. (supply and demand stable) Equipment : Containers and chassis are not in short supply. Rates : Stabilizing trend after price decline. North America Vessel Dwell Times Import surge at U.S. West Coast ports in wake of tariffs The JOC reports that US West Coast ports will see a significant increase in cargo volumes as importers frontload ahead of the expiration of the Trump administration's temporary tariff moratorium, but notes that the surge will be short-lived, starting this week and lasting through the end of July, and whether it will continue will not be known until after July 9 (90-day tariff moratorium on all countries) and August 14 (tariff moratorium on China). Western ports are considered to be import heavy when they reach 100,000 TEUs per week, and the Port of Los Angeles totaled 138,519 TEUs this week, with 124,713 TEUs expected next week and 101,003 TEUs for the week of July 6, according to the port's website. The Port of Long Beach expects imports to total 84,109 TEUs this week, before surging to 125,286 TEUs the following week and 116,947 TEUs the week of July 6th. After that, 93,797 TEUs are expected for the week of July 13, before rising again to 114,073 TEUs for the week of July 20. Many experts do not believe that this surge in container imports will cause significant congestion, but rather that the traditional peak shipping season of August through October has come a little early this year. For reference, the Port of Los Angeles totaled 320,878 TEUs in May, or about 71,000 TEUs per week, while the Port of Long Beach totaled 296,348 TEUs, or about 66,000 TEUs per week (by Piers) Meanwhile, according to the Global Port Tracker recently released by the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates, U.S. imports are expected to decline by 8.1% in July, 14.7% in August, 21.8% in September, and 19.8% in October compared to the same months in 2024. DHL Canada to Resume Normal Operations on Monday, June 30, following Labor Agreement DHL Express Canada announced today that it will resume normal operations on Monday, June 30, following a labor agreement with its union, Unifor. The agreement will resume parcel deliveries that were suspended on June 20th. Delta Air Lines Launches Parcel Delivery Service in the U.S. Delta Air Lines has launched a new parcel delivery service called Delta Cargo Deliver Direct, the WSJ reported today. Delta is working with its SmartKargo platform and trucking companies to provide door-to-door delivery services and aims to deliver hundreds of thousands of packages a day in the U.S., according to the company. According to GoBolt, Delta's shipping costs are 20 to 25 percent lower than FedEx and UPS, and its on-time performance is comparable to those companies, with tens of thousands of shipments a day of products like Arezzo shoes. FedEx Founder Fred Smith Dies at 80 Fred Smith, the founder of FedEx who invented the "hub-and-spoke" system, a revolutionary model that changed the paradigm of package delivery, died on Saturday, June 21 at the age of 80. Fred Smith was born in Memphis, and after leaving the Marine Corps, he founded Federal Express in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1971, and two years later grew the company from less than 400 employees serving 25 cities in Memphis to a global behemoth with more than 500,000 employees and offices in more than 210 countries and territories. His hub-and-spoke model was famously dismissed by his college professors at the time. Recognizing the importance of documents and parcels and inventing the hub-and-spoke model, current FedEx CEO Raj Subramaniam calls him "more than just a pioneer and founder" and remembers him as "the heart and soul of FedEx."

The Federal Reserve (Fed) left its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 4.25-4.50% on June 18, reaffirming its “wait and see” stance and maintaining the likelihood of two rate cuts within the year, which it has signaled since December. This is the fourth consecutive rate hike since President Trump took office. The recent escalation of the conflict between Israel and Iran has heightened the sense of geopolitical crisis in the Middle East, and some experts have raised concerns that the Fed's wolfish response could lead to an economic downturn in a situation where international oil prices are unstable, but the Middle East is energy self-sufficient without crude oil and both inflation and unemployment are favorable. However, most experts believe that the impact of the tariff policy has not yet been reflected in US prices and risks significantly pushing up inflation in the future, and in fact, real data is gradually showing signs of slowing down. For example, retail sales, which account for 70% of the US economy, fell 0.9% month-on-month in May. Latino consumers are staying home and spending less as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) ramps up raids at restaurants, construction sites, manufacturing plants and more, the New York Times and WSJ report. In its first-quarter earnings report, Coca cola cited reduced purchases by Latino consumers as one of the main reasons behind a 3% year-over-year decline in North American sales. Shoe store chain Shoe Palace noted during its recent earnings call that “customer visits are down sharply and the impact of immigration policy is clearly being felt.” President Trump's solution is being closely watched as a decrease in immigrants, who play an important role in the U.S. labor market, could slow down U.S. economic growth, which could reduce the Fed's room to cut interest rates and lead to a U.S. recession. Trans Pacific East Bound (TPEB) trends Demand: Demand is trending downward. Especially, July booking decreased sharply. Vessel supply: recovered to 90% of peak level. July is concerned about oversupply due to sharp decline in demand. Equipment : Containers and chassis are in good supply. The hub, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2027, is expected to shorten the transportation time between stations by 48 hours, significantly improving the quality of rail transportation services in Chicago and other parts of the Midwest. Union Pacific Railroad (UP) Raises Theft Coverage to $250K Amid ongoing struggles with cargo theft, the railroad industry is taking action, with Union Pacific (UP) set to significantly increase its cargo theft insurance payout limit from the current $100,000 to $250,000 starting July 1. However, the product requires the use of a special product code that carries an additional fee and requires the use of special security locks and anti-theft barrier seals, among other requirements, making its effectiveness questionable. In contrast, industry rival BNSF Railway does not require special locks and anti-theft seals for its $250,000 policy. UP also charges a fee of $100, while BNSF charges $80. AN-124 (the world's largest heavy freighter airplane) is reaching the end of its service life The world's largest freighter aircraft, the An-124, is approaching the end of its service life, raising concerns about the future of large air cargo transportation amid a significant increase in demand for heavy cargo in the aerospace, military, and energy sectors since the pandemic, the Journal of Commerce (JOC) reports. Ukraine-based Antonov Airlines, which operates seven An-124s, said the first of its aircraft will reach the end of its operational life in 2034, with the first retirement expected in 2034. While plans are underway to extend the life of some of the aircraft by 10 years, experts say it will take years to develop and field the aircraft, and neither Boeing nor Airbus, in particular, is likely to build a large, heavy freighter, which means higher freight rates and supply instability will continue. DHL Express Canada suspends parcel deliveries due to union strike DHL Express Canada went on strike on June 8 after collective negotiations broke down with Unifor, the union representing more than 2,100 truck drivers and warehouse and sortation workers who deliver parcels for DHL. DHL had been hiring replacement workers to handle parcel volumes, but on June 20, legislation banning the use of replacement workers came into effect, bringing operations to a complete halt. On June 17, DHL gradually stopped accepting parcels to and from Canada, and on June 19, DHL stopped accepting all parcels to and from Canada.
